Sharing a 2 Bedroom apartment with a roommate certainly has it’s share of benefits but there’s also a few potential pitfalls. Sure, you can save money and live in an apartment that you otherwise couldn’t afford, which is great! But, there are certain sacrifices you’ll have to make during your time living with a roommate, chief among these being your acceptable level of cleanliness. Unless you and your roommate are two clean freaks of the same genetic makeup, it is inevitable an instance will occur where you’re upset about the way your roommate handles chores.
But do not fret. All you’ve got to do is follow these 6 quick tips, and you’ll quickly and easily enjoy a cleaner apartment to share with your roommate.
1) Clean Up After Yourself
You’ve heard this one before, but it bears repeating- Clean Up After Yourself! If you and your Roommate each commit to cleaning your own dishes, cleaning your rooms, picking up after yourself in common areas, and generally leaving your space cleaner than you found it, you’ll never have problems. Keeping common areas clean is easy in a 2 bedroom – if you don’t have enough time to clean, just dump your stuff in your room and worry about it later so your roommate won’t have to.
Of course, we are human beings, and sharing a 2 bedroom apartment with a roommate never pans out like this, which brings us to our next tips.
The best practice is for you and your roommate to each layout your personal definitions of clean for each other. If you’re on the same page from the get-go, you’ll both have a much easier time, when it comes to apartment cleanliness.
But, where many roommates fall short, and where many feelings get hurt, is when communication in regards to household upkeep stops. Eventually, one of you will leave something for the other to clean and you’ll find yourselves at a crossroads: Will you be a healthy set of roommates that openly communicates? Or will you plummet down the pit of Passive Aggressiveness…which brings us to our next tip!
3) Don’t Become Passive-Aggressive
Passive Aggressive Notes, while they may provide hilarious content in the form of memes, are never fun to encounter. In fact, the worst part of sharing a 2 bedroom apartment with a roommate is when one of you resorts to passive-aggressive tendencies, hands down. Just don’t do it. It’s not cute; it’s irritating and antagonistic. Take the previous tip to heart and maintain an adult level of communication, or else all the colorful notes and constant side-eye will make you feel like you share your 2 bedroom apartment with a child.
4) Chore Chart FOR THE WIN!
It may sound juvenile, but if regular communication is tricky due to scheduling, or god forbid, personalities, a chore chart can go a long way towards helping you and your roommate keep your 2 bedroom apartment clean. Just divide chores in a way that makes sense (i.e. by area, room, section, or task), and create a chart that allows you to rotate responsibilities. The tricky thing is making sure you both stick to it – but that’s where communication comes in!
5) Exercise a Little Ingenuity for Bathroom Organization
The Bathroom is the nexus for issues over roommate cleanliness. The bathroom is one of the most important areas of your apartment to keep clean, but it’s also the one that gets dirty the quickest. But if you exercise a little ingenuity with your bathroom organization, you can declutter and maintain some semblance of order. Here are our two favorite tips:
