If you’re new to Seattle, or you just need a refresher allow us to break down one of Seattle’s most beloved festivals for you: Seafair,

The History of Seafair

Seafair’s story began in the early 1950s. Its original function was to celebrate Seattle’s centennial, as well as attract more tourists. Given the City’s reputation as the “boating capital of the world”, organizers made sure all the festivities were centered around a marine theme. The various activities included boat races, parades, sports, and contests.

Since then, Seafair has become a massive summer festival that attracts millions of people each year. The focus is still on Seattle’s marine culture, and it includes tons of cool events over a period of 10 weeks.

Torchlight Night

Torchlight night rivals the Blue Angles as the most iconic of Seafair events, and Seafair 2017 is actually the 68th annual year of Seafair’s Torchlight Parade. The Torchlight parade is so momentous that it used to be the finale, but scheduling has pushed it up this year. The parade takes off at dusk near the Seattle center, and winds along 4th avenue, towards the stadium district. The overall parade route is only about 2.5 miles, but it’s expected to draw nearly 200,000 people to downtown Seattle!
